"Love the whole concept of UKIHPA and the British Players that I coached at Junior International Level who are behind it. For generations of British Ice Hockey, so many have been forgotten about during their career or after. I'm proud to be supporting such a great cause, it’s just what British Ice Hockey and its assets need!"
Peter “Jonker” Johnson – Ice Hockey Biography.
Jonker is one of the defining figures of British ice hockey’s hard-nosed era. A player and coach whose influence helped shape the identity of the game in the North East and the whole of the UK. Born in County Durham, Johnson emerged from the local system and went on to become synonymous with the Durham Wasps, where he built a career that spanned more than two decades. Jonker was an uncompromising competitor, equally effective as a scoring forward and later as a defenceman - combining sharp offensive instincts with a physical edge that typified the era he played in.
Despite standing just 5ft 6in, Johnson’s impact was anything but small. Over 444 games, he amassed more than 500 goals and over 900 points, while also racking up significant penalty minutes, clear evidence of a player who played on the edge and set the tone physically as well as offensively.
His performances earned him international recognition, representing Great Britain at World Championship level in the early 1970s, where he contributed both goals and leadership on the international stage.
Following his playing career, Johnson transitioned into coaching with equal impact. He led teams to league titles, coached at both junior and senior levels, and played a key role in Great Britain’s national setup, assisting during a period that saw the national team achieve promotion to the top tier of world competition in the early 1990s.
Inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989, Johnson’s legacy extends beyond statistics. He is remembered as a fierce competitor, a natural motivator, and one of the game’s great characters. Someone who embodied the grit, pride, and personality of British ice hockey at its core.
Jonker coached 4 generations of Great British Athletes who many went on to represent their country at higher levels.
His father figure type mentality meant guys showed up as they were made accountable and every shift was 100% commitment.
Also being respected to bringing up 3 of the most talented British Players in Stephen Anthony and Shaun the Johnson Family are regarded and respected at the very highest level of British Ice Hockey.
